Chain notes

Handover
Each relay re-boosts the signal within two seconds of the last. The gap is deliberate: it is the sound of the coast breathing.
Power
Four relays run on mains, one on the pier's original generator, one on a bicycle the secretaries have not been told about.
Failures
Logged in the same ledger as the dramas. Some of the best episodes began as a relay going down.
Shortwave
Beyond the chain, the skip takes over after midnight. Iceland has written. The Azores have written. The trawler wrote first and is framed.
